In freeze dryer operation, a common misconception exists that the vacuum inside the chamber is maintained solely by continuous pumping from the vacuum pump. In fact, running the vacuum pump nonstop like a vacuum cleaner would lead to low efficiency and rapid equipment failure. The longterm high vacuum inside a freezedrying cabinet relies on the coordinated operation of an integrated system, consisting of cold traps, vacuum pumps, valves and chamber sealing components.
The cold trap serves as the first and most critical barrier of the vacuum system. Its internal temperature remains extremely low, typically ranging from -40℃ to -80℃. When water vapor generated by material sublimation travels from the chamber to the cold trap, it instantly desublimates into frost upon contact with the ultracold metal surfaces and firmly adheres to the inner wall.
By intercepting moisture in this way, the majority of water vapor is removed from the gas flow, leaving only noncondensable gases such as air and nitrogen. The cold trap effectively “freezes” water vapor before it reaches the vacuum pump, providing essential protection against pump damage.

Only the dry, noncondensable gases filtered by the cold trap are extracted out of the chamber by the vacuum pump. Free of moisture, these gases will not emulsify pump oil, enabling longterm and stable pump operation. The vacuum pump maintains the baseline vacuum level and discharges trace leaked air and minor noncondensable gases released from materials. When operating in tandem with a highefficiency cold trap, a properly functioning vacuum pump can sustain the chamber vacuum below 1 Pa.
Stable vacuum performance depends not only on gas extraction, but also on effective isolation against external air ingress. Highgrade vacuum valves and sealing rings form the airtight barrier between the freezedrying chamber and the external environment.
The main vacuum valve acts as the core passage connecting the chamber with the cold trap and vacuum pump. It remains fully open during drying to ensure smooth gas circulation and closes tightly before chamber venting to prevent reverse airflow. Door sealing gaskets are commonly made of silicone rubber, which must stay elastic, clean and intact. Even tiny cracks or surface particles can cause microleakage and fail vacuum targets.

Vacuum maintenance is dynamically regulated throughout the freezedrying process. In primary drying, massive sublimation produces large amounts of water vapor, causing temporary pressure spikes. The control system stabilizes pressure at set parameters by adjusting pump pumping speed or introducing micro regulated gas leakage. In secondary drying, sublimation is nearly complete with minimal gas generation, and the system only needs to maintain a steady baseline vacuum.
During the entire process, the cold trap runs continuously, the vacuum pump operates intermittently or continuously, and valves open and close following programmed logic. Their combined collaboration sustains a stable vacuum environment inside the chamber.
The vacuum system of a freezedrying cabinet is a sophisticated collaborative network. The vacuum pump is not an omnipotent extractor, but only one key component in the whole system. Daily maintenance tasks including cold trap upkeep, sealing inspection and vacuum pump oil replacement directly determine the overall stability and service life of the vacuum unit.
